Video
streaming
has become one of the most popular online activities, whether it's
watching
a tutorial, catching up with a favorite series, or enjoying a movie night. However, streaming services and
video player
interfaces can sometimes limit our viewing experience. Thanks to the power of Google
Chrome
extensions
, users can enhance their viewing experience. In this article, we will explore one of the
best Chrome extensions
for video playback, which has gained an impressive aggregate rating of 3.57 out of 5.
Meet Ultrawidify, a top Chrome extension designed to optimize your video watching experience. This extension has been embraced by many users for entertainment apps, specifically for its ability to remove unnecessary black bars from videos, thus providing a more immersive viewing experience. Besides, it handles automatic aspect ratio detection, allowing it to adjust according to the video being played seamlessly. Furthermore, the extension supports most major streaming services, including YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch, and Netflix.
Positive User Feedback and Reviews
The high rating of this Chrome extension is largely credited to its outstanding features and the positive user feedback it has received. Users have appreciated how it has transformed their video streaming experience. 'Ambrus Török,' for instance, praised it for being the only working extension they have come across and gave it props for its helpful error messages, despite a slightly complex user interface.
Positive feedback also comes from 'Mattia Mossenta,' who acknowledged the extension for providing a solution for the wrong aspect ratio, even when other extensions failed. 'PPP 414,' another satisfied user, shared their satisfaction with the extension after it enabled their YouTube movies to fill their new widescreen, thereby enhancing their watching experience greatly.
Understanding the Criticisms
Like any product, this Chrome extension has faced some criticisms as well. Some users have reported occasional glitches, such as the video being stretched instead of the black bars being cropped. 'Jarrod Lu' mentioned that the extension sometimes widened the video and left black bars, even with the stretch option turned off. '7h07h' noted that the extension no longer resizes the height and only stretches the width.
However, it's important to note that these criticisms have been addressed, with the developers providing timely fixes and helpful information to navigate through these common issues. For example, a fix was given for the problem of stretching videos instead of cropping, which was identified as a Google Chrome bug. Users are advised to go to the chrome://flags/#use-angle and select D3D9 to solve the problem.

This extension goes beyond just optimizing your video viewing experience. It's a life-enhancer that makes your online video watching more engaging and enjoyable. 30 Reviews For This Extension
This maybe the best extention I have installed after adblockers ofcourse
This is great ! It works exactly how I need it to! It has it's limitations, it won't work with everything, but you can use it on web based video players to make your videos go full screen... Great job !
PLEASE BRING BACK THE ABILITY TO SCROLL VERTICALLY WHILE ZOOMED IN... *PLEASE*
This is probably the most suitable Chrome extension for wide screens, with normal customization options and automatic operation.
its not doing anything!
Works theoretically, but it's convoluted menu will only zoom in, crop out sections of the video, and stretch a video to 4:3 or 16:9. It seems to only work with videos that are stretched to 16:9 but should be 4:3 or improperly rendered to have black bars on the sides or top/bottom, and removes those letterboxes that should not be there. But if the video stretched improperly, like if a movie is meant to be letterboxed or meant to be projected in anamorphic widescreen format or 2.39:1. CinemaScope or a less wide widescreen format with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Or 16:9, and you want this program to "fix" that, it won't, and seems to be incapable of putting a video back to it's native 16:9 or 2:39:1 or 1:85:1 if an uploader converted or encoded the video to the improper format so it appears "stretched". The only issue it seems to fix is improper black borders, or if a 4:3 video is improperly stretched to 16:9, like an old 90s show that's been rendered/converted to be widescreen when it's not meant to be, making it look stretched or misshapen, it doesn't seem to fix the opposite issue (It can't stretch 16:9 back to it's proper 16:9 and can only stretch 4:3 back to 4:3.) I agree with other reviewers, the menu is annoying, it pops back up on any little mouse movement, and it can only be set to appear in full screen, or on all the time, if you're browsing the comments, or not set at all and you gotta go up to the extension menu, which isn't intuitive. Also the worst is the way it can't "reset" when you switch from video to video so it'll try to stretch the next video you watch even if it's properly formatted, or zoom in, or crop it, you can try to set it to "reset" but this seems to only happen some of the time, and it's a pain in the dumperhump to try to "tune" the settings each time you come across a video that's been improperly rendered by the uploader, after a week of use, I find it only works on 4:3 that's been stretched to 16:9 to squish it back to 4:3, or remove black bars, but other than that, it's extremely limited, janky, and a convoluted UI that's neither intuitive or straightforward. Definitely not cool. Definitely not where it's at. And definitely not like Honey We Shrunk Ourselves in terms of execution.
Works like a charm
Puts the video in the bottom right corner for every mode cutting off most of the video.
0 stars if possible. does not work for custom aspect ratio, wish to use it on 5:4 monitors to eliminate black bars on top and bottom but does not work as advertised. featurelist seemingly has every single button there but does nothing.
quick and easy to use. works well with "Improve Youtube!"
Seems to work, but the UI is so annoying and completely unable to be disabled. I disabled in settings, modified .json files and imported them, changed dev settings, but nothing.
This used to be a very simple tool that worked great, then they tried to "improve" it by adding a UI that contantly pops up even when you disable it, 18:9 stopped working completely, half the times the keyboard shortcuts stop working, the auto scaler has flickering problems when it can't decide on the correct aspect ratio of the video and randomly shrinks the whole video down to a tiny box. It's generally just a pain to use now. If it aint broke, don't fix it.
worked fine before then after the big UI UPDATE started to fail on some pages, sometimes shrinks the video, can't change binds
It used to work much better prior to latest update. Now it randomly shrinks video to a small rectangle, it forces its silly and unnecessary in-player UI by default, it reset my settings from before, it doesn't support hotkeys to scale up/down in steps as it used to.
For a while now, my extensions been messing with whatever video I'm watching on YouTube. What I mean is that my video will suddenly stop playing and I'll get a "This page is unresponsive" error message. I've taken off the Ultrawidify extension and re-added it multiple times and confirmed that the problem was indeed coming from this extension. Would highly recommend it, if it worked as anticipated, but unfortunately I can't....
do NOT use this. the permissions required give it access to anything on your machine. it works, but it's a scam that only works when you give it permission to access everything
It works
I started having several play issues with all sorts of media - including WhatsApp audios! - for no apparent reason, besides severe freezes when viewing videos on the browser. Today I looked into the Task Manager for Vivaldi and this "simple" extension was eating half a gigabyte of memory, with more than 10 instances. Killed it all and restricted it to youtube.com, praying this will fix my issues.
Used to be perfect until version 6.2.1 when stopped working on Vivaldi alongside Enhancer for YouTube. On Brave still works but it's an older version, and I still need to stretch manually. I don't know what happened, but seems a broken extension now. It's sad.
best extension!!! to author very big respect !!! very good/
Revert the update please
doesn't work
Worked for the first day I downloaded it but now it does nothing. None of the buttons change the video
Changing it back to 5 star since the previous design decision of adding the control overlay has been reverted.
Broken again. Videos aligning to left side for no reason. Can't change to centre. Disabled extension and video went back to centre.
6.0.0.1 update fixes everything we are back bois
How did you not realize the hover menu is so intrusive and distracting! I bump my mouse and *bam* there it is, right on top of the video constantly. Will be turning off until it gets changed.
The hover menu is showing up on several websites that have embedded video content. It's obtrusive.
The new hover menu is obstructive and annoying. Will uninstall for now
it is a great extension it did work until they updated it recently and when ever i tell the settings for youtube to persist all the time the settings never save and they just reset so every time i watch another video i have to redo the settings i just applied all they had to do was not touch anything because it was working perfectly fine
